Event & Artist Details
An eclectic night of left-field, exploratory electronics curated by Matthew Ryals. Musicians include intermedia art group, Testu Collective, whose work takes hybrid forms, often amalgamations of the chemical, aural, and sculptural; Jacob Sachs-Mishalanie, a composer of generative works which manage to balance refined architecture with unabashed playfulness; MA, the duo of ÉMU insomniac hotel (aka Maria Takeuchi and Alec Fellman), creators of captivating soundscapes; and Matthew Ryals whose live work explores the intersection of generative process and improvisation.
Matthew Ryals is a musician, sound designer, and educator based in Brooklyn, NY. Primarily working with a modular synthesizer, his music explores aleatoricism, cybernetics, and unfixed forms. Tiny Mix Tapes has described his music as “filter[ing] the emotion of the human experience through the cold circuitry of electronics”. His third album, impromptus in isolation, was released June 17, 2022 on Sound As Language. Elaborating on methods developed for his 2021 release Voltage Scores, the entire album was recorded live without overdubs and merges free improvisation, generative processes, and the multi-sectional forms of classical composition. For this upcoming event and summer tour, Matthew has developed a performance patch consisting of numerous “zones” or loose compositions, each centered around various generative processes. In lieu of a lead sheet, each zone serves as a navigation point for deep, improvisational exploration resulting in a unique and entirely unpredictable performance each night.
Testu Collective is an NYC-based intermedia art group founded by Dan Tesene and Serena Stucke. Testu creates experimental videos, concept soundtracks, audiovisual experiences, and performance art installations. Testu has produced site-specific installations and curated works for Triskelion Arts (Brooklyn), Wallplay’s On Canal (NYC), Flux Factory (Long Island City), Sound Pedro (Los Angeles), Chashama Storefront (Brooklyn), CTM Festival(online), Ars Electronica(NYC). Most recently, Testu created music videos for Clarice Jensen & a performance installation at Ace Hotel NYC.
Originally from Utica, NY, Jacob Sachs-Mishalanie is a Brooklyn based electronic composer. His work focuses on a playful approach to generative composition with MaxMSP and uncanny relationships between acoustic and electronic sounds. He is pursuing a PhD at the CUNY Graduate Center and teaches Music Technology at Hunter College and Brooklyn College.
MA is the collaborative sound works of ÉMU insomniac hotel. MA explores collaboration by way of offering neutral, minimal, wabi-sabi atmospheric ambient soundscapes.
