What is Cicada?

Created with the help of wonderful artists from around the world, Cicada is a synthesizer that produces sound acoustically from various electronic sources. Instead of sampling or using digital or analog oscillators, Cicada converts voltage to vibrations in a mechanical oscillator positioned on a soundboard: achieving acoustic synthesis. The input can be any electronic audio signal (from another synth, or a computer, for example). Deliberately exploiting nonlinearities as a means of shaping tone color, Cicada combines the range and flexibility of an electronic sound generator with the tactile control and organic sound of an acoustic instrument.

Off the GridOff the Grid is a curated experimental music live streaming show run by New York Modular Society. Experimental music is difficult to define due to its highly subjective nature that often defies genre conventions. Rather than imposing limits or explicitly naming genres, we simply desire to encourage experimentation. We welcome everybody, including those who do not define themselves as experimental artists but would like to explore the more experimental side of their creativity.
